100 Years Of Father's Day: The 2010 Centennial Gift Guide

In 1966, President Lyndon Baines Johnson signed a presidential proclamation declaring the third Sunday in June as Father's Day. Before that in 1924, President Calvin Coolidge supported the idea of a national Father's Day. But what are the grass roots of Father's Day? We can all probably guess that the most influential factor in the creation of Father's Day was not a president taking notice, but rather sons and daughters desperately wanting their father's to get the recognition they so deserve.

It started with Sonora Dodd in 1910 when Dodd set out to honor and celebrate her father with a special day. After all, he had raised her and her 5 siblings all on his own after his wife passed-away during childbirth. Dodd figured that if Mothers had this recognition, why not Dads too? Her well-deserving father was William Smart and he was a war veteran living on a rural farm in eastern Washington State. His daughter's recognition of his strength and selflessness was pivotal in defining the character of the future American father as well as setting into motion the establishment of today's holiday that tips a cap to the men who've earned and respected their badge of fatherhood.

The summer of 2010 marks 100 years of celebrating dad's prowess, strength and commitment to his family. He can kick back, relax and bask in the shower of gifts that rain down from friends and family but this is a big one, the Centennial! What do I get him that says more than you've ever said before at Father's Day? Well, finding dad something super-special for the centennial Father's Day is a snap if you can think out of the box a little and go with something classic, long-lasting and personal. He'll really cherish anything that hits on all three of those attributes. You're not getting him a tie are you?
